You all know the feeling, when you have had a hard weeks work and the wind looks a bit fickle, or not quite the right direction etc.<br />
<div>
<a name='more'></a><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Friday was like this for me, I did not have my biggest board and the wind was barely giving any white horses through the line of boat moorings about 200m from the shore. This is the usual guide for my 111l/69cm board and 8m sail. Dark patches of water and no white indicates I need my bigger board.<br />
<div id="fb-root">
</div>
<script>(function(d, s, id) {
var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
if (d.getElementById(id)) return;
js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;
js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1";
fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);
}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));</script>
<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then the thought went through my head, if I do not go out then I will end up doing 40mins on the turbo trainer, and the rest of my exercises anyway. So I rigged and went out. It was brilliant! I was grinning all evening due to it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today was a little similar, but the other end of the beaufort scale in terms of wind. I woke to the view of waves and spray just over the top of Chesil Beach, with 35knots average shown on the harbour wall. This was west too, 35 knots west in the winter is about as appealing as the dentist at times. In fact a visit to the dentist is needed after due to the tooth rattling chop unless it is high water.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I went regardless, took safe kit, bigger boards (65cm and 59cm) and a small sail. One thing I noticed was my fins. While I was of larger build I noticed I was spinning out more often, I blamed the fin of course, being old and very well used. My go to fin for my 100l board is the <a href="http://www.blackprojectfins.com/products/windsurf-fins/type-s/" target="_blank">35cm Type S Black Project</a>, it did not spin out once today, and held amazingly well in the varied conditions, as did the 32cm in my smaller board. Both took me to just under 34knots in low tide very choppy conditions, with the 35 giving me a 26+ knot nautical mile in tricky conditions.</div>

Today <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5471468,0.6926776,12.91z" target="_blank">"The Ray" in Southend, UK</a> delivered for Scotty Stallman. This is a well known speed spot on the right tide, and can work in several wind directions. In the past few days a few speedies had mentioned it could be a good call to go, and GPSSS shows Scotty turned up, tamed the elements and achieved the next target in his list.<br />

The nutrition plan I talked briefly about in my last post is what has knocked 10 years off how I feel (at least) and honestly made me a lot more alert with more clarity of thought than ever.<div id="fb-root">
</div>
<script>(function(d, s, id) {

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My fiancee Kat has been telling me for several years the benefits of a raw diet, something she advised for her mum when she had cancer. The cancer has left her body and she is healthier than ever 6 years after she was given 6 months by the doctors. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since I had been put on Warfarin my diet had got worse, along with a lot of pressure at work my weight had shot up and time on the water all but disappeared other than the odd session in the holidays. I was starting to feel my age, with aches in both elbows, joint pain in my left foot and longer recovery times than I had ever experienced. In mid November I decided something needed to change, set my mind to it and started going for long walks with the dog in preparation.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Over Christmas we happened to watch <a href="http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/" target="_blank">"Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead"</a> which is the pop culture version of the science Kat has been studying now for over 6 years. It all makes complete sense, and is remarkably well made and enjoyable to watch. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started out on January 1st 2016 weighing 102kg the night before. Today is February 1st, I now weigh 88kg but did eat a rather big curry last night (homemade with fresh veg, no rice). For most of the month I have been only drinking veg juice, the past two weeks I have been eating/drinking it blended with a Nutribullet. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first few days were hard and full of cravings, though the supplements such as magnesium that Kat was giving me suppressed the cravings. After a week I no longer craved crisps, now even the smell of them is like smelling the chemical cupboard at work. After 2 weeks I had a nut roast at the weekend, and yesterday I had a home cooked veg curry. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mixed in with all this is my exercise routine, much to the dogs disgust. Being a Bull Terrier he is not a big fan of long walks, so 8-10km every evening means he now slinks away when he hears the lead rattle. Also I am routinely doing 100 press ups, situps and squats. I am using free weights for my shoulders, arms and chest twice per week, and a turbo trainer and bike almost every day for 45minutes. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is without a doubt the change in food and not the exercise that has resulted in the weight loss, the exercise is simply getting me windsurfing fit again. Though a muscle somewhere in my calf is hurting a lot after yesterday, no matter how much training I do off the water it never prepares every muscle!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The goal is 85kg and to come off Warfarin by the end of April, I know the doctors will disagree, but if I go to them with much lower cholesterol and blood pressure that is down to 120/80 or even less then I have a good argument to stop it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
More importantly I have found my windsurfing mojo again, and can't wait to get back out on the water this week!</div>

It has been a very busy 18months or so since my last post on here. Not busy on the water though. It is time to get back on it. Today was my first decent session in a good few months as I am now starting to feel almost as fit and healthy as I have ever been.<br>

Work has been hard, there have been lots of changes, many for the better though I am sad to see some friends look for jobs elsewhere due to those changes. My fitness got to its worst in my life, and my weight went over 100kg.</div>

<div>
Since January 1st I have been eating raw fruit and veg, in juice, blended and very occasionally fermented grape juice in green bottles. Since the start I have gone from 100kg dead down to 88kg, though mid autumn I was hitting almost 105kg on the scales.</div>

<br></div>
<div>
First session back with a 66cm board and 7.3m sail I realised how much weight I had lost, the board was like a battleship and the sail felt more powerful than it did last time I used it.</div>

<div>
One thing that has happened is Scotty Stallman who wrote a<a href="http://www.redsurfbus.com/2013/02/young-talented-speed-surfer-scotty.html" target="_blank"> post for me a long time ago</a> is now far outclassing myself and most other Portland Harbour regulars. Today I knew he would beat my peak, so I did a couple of nautical miles, quite sure I could at least stay on top with those, not a chance! His laydown gybes also look very classy now.</div>

This has not been a great year on the water for me, the first 4 months I rested my shoulder which is now good with no recurring pain. Just as I was settling back into full on downwind runs and really going for it while overpowered I tested the theory that taking Warfarin causes Osteoporosis. I am glad to say there is no evidence for this in my case, but I am surprised my foot didnt snap off. <div>

Coming to the end of a run out over the chop yesterday I was aiming to go behind someone who was sailing across the wind on starboard. He had right of way, I respected that and aimed behind him, and should have been well clear, when I was about 20m away he decided to crank upwind and drop in the water, in a split second I was nearly on top of him so cranked upwind myself and crashed, front foot trapped in the strap. Luckily a few people helped me back to shore, and also today getting to and from the hospital for X rays. </div>

Kat and I have bought a house, this particular house is 150m from the waters edge, and specifically the big salty lake I sail in. The rear bedroom window has a view over the famous Chesil Beach, if white horses can be seen over there then I can walk to the front bedroom to check out and see who is out on the water. There has not been much wind this summer, and often the seabreeze has not been quite enough to go out, but kites have been out. Luckily for them a crossbow does not have the range from my front bedroom to reach them ;)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have a new (to me) board on its way soon and need to order some new sails for next year. A boom may be on the cards as well. Some of my kit is looking a little worn, my 111l 69cm Exocet RS4 is very spongey in between the back straps from gybing. This is going in for repair and an RS3 is coming to give me a wider range of boards, or rather spread the load as the RS4 is by far my most used board.<br />
<br />
Every morning now I get up to my childhood dream, a sea view. I get to walk here with our dog every morning, although some are not quite as nice as this photo, its a great place to live.<br />

After about 6 months of reduced movement in my shoulder it appears to be a lot better. Following my last post I have rested my left shoulder since Christmas, and now can exercise without pain the next day. I can still feel a slight twinge when I raise it straight out to my side but it has definitely improved a lot. This seemed to happen almost overnight as well. I went through a couple of days where it ached like a broken bone aches, not particularly painful but uncomfortable then all of a sudden I was able to move it fully without a sharp pain. Now I am up to 60 pressups a day and think I should venture back onto the water very soon.<div id="fb-root">

Windsurfing was not that bad with it, even recovering from a waterstart there was no real noticeable pain, it was the following day that the pain came. The rest has hopefully allowed it to repair, only use will now confirm that.</div>

<div>
I am still waiting for confirmation that my dream house will be mine, with views over Portland Harbour and access to get on the water at a minutes notice my heart is set on it. I am just waiting for the vendor to sort things out, all is signed and waiting from my end. I hope to post a pic from it next time I write, showing just how lucky I am :D</div>

Life has been very busy, work has been getting better and better. Because of this I finally put an offer in for a house locally. It is within 50m of Portland Harbour, so I cannot wait to move in and be able to get on the water after work every day with ease.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Windsurfing of late has been poor, I beat my PB top speed just before Christmas with a max of 37.69 on Portland Harbour but have not been on the water since. In the summer I foolishly tried holding down a board in chest high shoredump in Cornwall. I somehow injured my left shoulder and it never got better. At Christmas I started packing my flat up and really pulled it again, to the point where I could not lift my arm out by my side without a fair bit of pain. The pain is not the problem as I can ignore it, but it loses all strength as well.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I decided to rest it, knowing the Doctor would just put me on painkillers for a while I opted to consult a few friends who had similar problems. One is a sports teacher and physio, he gave me a resistance band to use once I had rested it for at least a month (which is harder said that done without strapping my arm up). The month was up a couple of weeks ago, it does feel a hell of a lot better. I am now just building strength back into it gradually. If I am moving next to the water I want to be able to paddle when its not windy and want to be fixed before I move.</div>

Will post again more regularly again soon.</div>

This is far from a windsurf related post. This is a Google Blog and I have a feeling that the success of this has helped my application to Google to go on their prestigious Teacher Academy. I have been told only 100 educators across the world per year are invited, I was asked to apply by my school as we are the first school to issue Chromebooks to every student. Google visited and I think they liked what they saw in my classroom.<br />

<div>
Only 3 of us at school were asked to apply, one of which teaches Business and IT, the other is classed as the 'Digital Innovation Leader' (I think) and is much higher up the chain of command than I. Their application videos I think were much more polished than mine so something swung the decision my way, it must have been all my work on here, and all your time for reading it (of course they have access to all the analytics as they own them!).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This could well mean big things, I will be with some of the most creative educators the world has to offer, along with everything Googly at their head office in London. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After years of being in the doldrums career wise things are certainly looking up, I will work very hard while the wind doesnt blow (or only blows from the North, which is far too cold right now!). Some of you have followed and supported me through my ups and mainly downs at work. Now under new management things are going from better to even better, the whole ethos at the school is changing. I tried to change it this way within maths years ago when I joined the school but was fought every step of the way by external advisers. For the first time since I left my old school I found myself going in early (always go in early.....but) with a big smile.</div>

I have managed 2 great warm up sessions today and yesterday after months of a session every fortnight! Both sessions have given me great speeds for the conditions, both sessions on the 2013 Hot Sails GPS and almost giving me PB's for the kit size. In my last 3 sessions I have done 5 nmi runs over 28knots, and have only managed to get over 28 twice before in total. Today I managed 1750m over 29knots, just had a slow start to the run.</div>

At a few months short of 40 I have made it onto the Hot Team UK webpage. Nearly 4 years ago after my Heart Attack one of my goals was to try to do something substantial (for me!) in sport as ultimately I want to write a book to help others recover. Along the way I have met loads of people online and in real life who have told me that reading the first few items on this website (<a href="http://www.redsurfbus.com/p/1000-nautical-mile-challenge.html">http://www.redsurfbus.com/p/1000-nautical-mile-challenge.html</a>) helped them gain confidence to get back out on the water after similar illnesses.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is nothing out there in the literary world to help younger men who have suffered heart disease, yet there are 1000's of books to help people and families come to terms with cancer. Heart Disease eats away at you mentally, its like running a car knowing that the engine is on its way out, it seems to run okay day to day but you know at the back of your mind that at some point it can come to a grinding halt. It is only time that heals this, as the days turn to weeks to months to years you tend to think about it less and less. The tiny twinges that everyone gets in their chest are amplified to a deafening level with heart disease even though most are absolutely nothing. Each one reminds you though.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ironically I feel about as fit right now as I did straight after the heart attack, lack of wind and too much work has caused that. Time to sort my priorities out and start exercising every day again as hopefully the winds are about to return.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thanks Hot Sails, it has made my day.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The last three weeks I have had no chance to do any other bits I have on my list to complete the conversion. The van has been visiting the van doctors though, for minor surgery.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First time was for a break check up. After visiting two tyre places locally to see about getting the handbrake sorted (lever had too much travel) both told me I would likely need new discs and pads all round. I took it into <a href="http://www.dunnings-automatics.co.uk/index.php" target="_blank">Dunnings Automatics Ltd</a> in Weymouth, which is the place that diagnosed the last van with auto-gearbox death and were very honest about it all. So I took Pazuzu in expecting a bill towards £500. After work I went to pick it up and the bill was ten times less than expected, all that needed doing was the handbrake adjusted, they said the discs are quite new on the front, pads all round are newish and there was still a good 5000miles that I should get out of the rear pads. How many garages are there that are as honest as that? Maybe a lot are, I would suspect there are just as many that would have charged for new pads and a couple of hours labour and left me none the wiser. I recommend them to anyone, they are a small family business and really helpful. I feel guilty for not going to my old mechanic (he recommended Dunnings for the automatic gearbox repair originally) who also was great, but this van wont fit in his workshop, and he is a one man unit and usually booked up for the month!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next job was to get the MOT, it failed due to number plate bulbs and the tow bar electric hookup not having a cover. The reason was that someone could get electrocuted from an uncovered hook up, I find this very unlikely as I took the fuse out ages ago as I never use it. They put a bit of tape over the casing, sorted out the lights which ended up being the spring connector in the door not touching the contacts, and it passed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYmoqq5YRyQDkAQlyPyeEaf05ZIUEIqArgwciKzDuA9qAajGNdNxm4phFuNo2K7etIpmODv-x49UmpNF0H0PDw86ABAgXDQhjMqsDjdRv57QK3sMopbrgKYrkLpGKYoo1fsW0zn8Gatll1/s1600/camper_van_alloys_team_dynamics_yokohama_geolander_mean.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYmoqq5YRyQDkAQlyPyeEaf05ZIUEIqArgwciKzDuA9qAajGNdNxm4phFuNo2K7etIpmODv-x49UmpNF0H0PDw86ABAgXDQhjMqsDjdRv57QK3sMopbrgKYrkLpGKYoo1fsW0zn8Gatll1/s640/camper_van_alloys_team_dynamics_yokohama_geolander_mean.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Next job was to get rid of the slight knocking from the front over rough roads (most roads in England!), this was either coming from the drop links or the anti roll bushes so I had them replaced, and plugged into the VAGCOM. Nothing serious came up on there and it was cleared. Dunnings also arranged to get the tracking done, the great thing about them is even if they cannot do it they get it done by trusted local places (MOT and Tracking...). Now it doesnt pull slightly to the left as it did.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I journeyed over to TopGear Bridport for my wheels to be fitted. They were the cheapest ones I could find, and there is not much choice for this van that has a good load rating. Even a lot of the more expensive ones that fit had a load rating I wouldn't want to trust so I opted for the cheaper ones (rated to 1150kg). Luckily the factory (Team Dynamics) had some unpainted in stock, so they ordered Satin Black for me along with some Yokohama Geolander tyres. These are a fair bit bigger than the old ones at 16in 225/75. The front bumper needed a trim and occasionally I can hear a tiny rub on the drivers side wheel arch through a sharp right hand turn, this is just from the very edge of the tyre which will wear back quite soon so I am not worried about it. The ride is a lot smoother, even over British A roads full of repairs and pot holes there is hardly a bump to be felt. Also the speedo now reads correctly, it did under read by about 8%.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most importantly they really go well with the van, the big chunky tyres and black alloys finish it off well. Next on the list to do is join up the decat stainless section that is already fitted with a new stainless tail section, probably with a twin side exit just in front of the rear wheel. It needs a new back section anyway as I have patched it up in two places due to rust, for a little more stainless comes with a lifetime guarantee.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

Inside I have matched the rear speakers that I put in with some upgraded 10cm fronts from Rockford Fosgate, still quite cheap but the sound is great. Next month is insurance month, already been quoted £190 so quite chuffed with that, following month is Tax which is a much lower bracket than the old van. Best news is now after 3 weeks of work I still have fuel left in the tank, which is smaller than the Caravelle tank by about 12litres and that would be well past the red light warning by now. So all in all, bigger is definitely better in this case.</div>

Kat unfortunately is working most weekends so I dont get the chance to go camping as often as I want, hopefully we will get some luck soon and can change our lifestyles a bit. I think that may mean me moving out of teaching though, and to be honest I wont miss it. I will miss helping students and seeing them achieve but the current policies in education are likely to send the whole industry into the same hole banking is in. If we force feed kids to sit exams earlier and earlier they will lose all passion for learning in my opinion, I did not become a teacher to do that. I have been looking at jobs outside teaching over the past two weeks but most would force me to move away from the coast, I would rather live as a beach bum than do that though.</div>

With a long time off the water a call was made that a storm was building over Iceland and sending strong winds to the UK. As the weekend drew closer the forecast was still there, a summer of promises a week away never appearing and this was good news. Many windsurfers hit the water at my local spot, the winds built over the day and the kites cleared off leaving lots of space for the bravest.....and by that point, fittest!<br />

Monday was the day for West Kirby, again a workday for me and not in the holidays. Lots of the UK speeders arrived for the promise of good winds in the (near) perfect direction. Here are a few words from some of the best in the country, and I am sure they have proven now that they are also some of the best in the World!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ian Richards wrote this with his post on GPS Speedsurfing.</div>

Kirby was buzzing today, conditions looked excellent at times but you really had to pick your moment for that fast run, it needed more wind for a record 5 x average day but at least myself and Andy Holland smashed the same gust and both scored a massive PB. Problem was we could'nt do it again or get anywhere near it ,but I'm not complaining.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">

What is remarkable is Ian has proven that it certainly is not about the latest kit, he did this on an NP sail with a Fanatic Falcon both from 2006. Old speed boards like this go for relatively little money on Ebay, so anyone who windsurfs a lot can fit one in their quiver and have a go on the speed scene.<br />
<br />
Jim Crossley also scored a great session, putting himself in the top 10 for the year along with Ian. Jim is really showing consistency in every speed session now, each time West Kirby, The Ray or even Portland Harbour fires up he is always posting scores at the top end of the scale.<br />
<br />
Will Trossell beat me to first place novice at Weymouth Speed Week a couple of years ago with a knot lead, I was gutted about it but his post from West Kirby shows he is by far a better sailor than I. With a 2sec peak of 47.3 knots he has placed himself up with the top sailors who have ever visited the legendary boating lake. He had this to say;<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Started off at 8.30am with the JP and a gusty, super broad wind making it hard to get above 43kt peaks. I was using all my kit for the first time today and it kept getting faster. I hooked one big gust that gave me the peak speed and it felt like there was more there for sure. Evo 5 was rock solid as was the fin. I feel ready! If I have one complaint on the day its Ian - I thought I have finally beaten the bugger but no - one hour later after I saw him jumping up and down with a PB. Maybe another time :-) congrats though Ian. Great to see everyone enjoying themselves with quite a lot of PBs I think - an awesome day!</blockquote>
Good luck in Luderitz Will.<br />
<br />
When the rest of the scores are analysed it could be assumed that the three guys mentioned above caught a good gust for their peaks as all the peaks below are a lot more consistent with the 10 second runs which really shows the high standard of sailing they achieved. Jim and Neil Hardwick scored a couple of amazing 500m runs, which I believe are difficult due to the length of the run and the size of the chop at the end of it (hopefully I will find out soon).<br />
<br />
Jon Kennett deserves a special mention, while not at the top of the scores for the day he proved himself well for his first venture out with a GPS at West Kirby. Jon has made many boards specially for the spot with his growing brand Moo Custom. Jon said;<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
My 1st posting and speed session at West Kirby. Learn a lot over the two days and can now retire as I hit 40 knot peak on the 2nd day. Very happy with this result and may have another go as i have got the bug!</blockquote>
Finally I would like to mention a little about Matthew York, a very dedicated speed sailor whom has invested a lot of time and money to chase his personal bests. He smashed them on his new Point 7 AC1 sails with an average of 41.45 and 2 sec peak of 43.78, well done Matt you deserve it.<br />
<br />
Well done to all who sailed there, sorry if I have not mentioned your name this time round. This article is for Ian and his amazing 50knot achievement on British waters which has only been shown by two others in the past. I do hope Pete Young can get up there again soon to get the big 50. All results can be seen <a href="http://www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=forum&forum=2&val=55482" target="_blank">here on the GPS Speedsurfing</a> site.<br />

I always start working on the bottom, and cover the rails twice for strength. At each stage the laminate, fibreglass or carbon, is vacuum bagged to optimise the resin to fibre ratio. Vacuum bagging also avoids bubbles forming in the laminate.</div>

The second stage in my production method is to create the sandwich. This layer adds significantly more strength to a board and is used in many engineering processes to keep things light and allow the use of what would otherwise be weak materials to make incredibly strong structures.<br />

Phil Carbon has been good enough to share some of his designs for the upcoming Luderitz event which must be the biggest event of the year, now formally entering its second year. They are currently digging the trench, and the weather gurus are forecasting some big winds. With many more entrants than last year I have no doubt records will be broken again, and I am confident that we can beat the kites this time. I personally am looking forward to seeing the extra competition from the Australian team who are going this year.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As an experienced board designer I was fortunate enough to be involved with a big project for Luderitz 2013. This is to shape and design a prototype for a young French speed rider. To help him to participate to this competition and to reach his dream of passing the 50 knots wall. I am going to sell this board after the competition in a big lottery to raise money to pay for his entrance and travel to the event.</span></div>

Feeling quite disappointed, with 99 more votes than any of the others, and almost as many votes as the rest put together Pazuzu did not make it even into the runners up category.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
243 votes vs 70 for the winner, 63 and 36 for the runners up. The winner is deserving as a lot of money was spent on the van and its a great van, I chose this one to win and it was part of the inspiration for me to re do RSB1...which obviously never happened. Apparently value for money was one of the criteria though, also practicality....and public opinion.</div>
<div>

<div>
No worries as everyone voting means more than a piece of wood as a prize, although I would love something from Surf Mirrors as his designs are amazing.</div>

Finally here is the windsurf kit loaded. I have opted to put a temporary rack over the wheel arch box to hold sails in place. After a session yesterday I am already not happy with this set up and think my original one will be much better with the sails on the floor and boards at an angle above them. Like this it takes too much time to unload and load the van, I like to be able to slide stuff in and out without problem. I will complete this a few days before the National Windsurf Festival and the end of the summer holidays for me.<br />

After the 5 days away last week I returned with a snagging list. These were little jobs such as remake the soft cupboard doors out of a better carpet. Trim the edge of the front seat where it caught the kitchen cupboard and add some trim round the ceiling edge to give a better finish.<br />
<div id="fb-root">

Its not a huge problem but still something I will work on, perhaps with a few small bits of carpet glued onto them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today I set about the task of completing the cabinet above the sink. This was harder than I anticipated, and should have built the whole thing out of the van and fitted it as a unit. I built it round a certain sized clip-lock plastic box, which now sits in it perfectly with space for a few other bits. The base was the most difficult as I did not want to carpet this as it is above the stove. I opted to spray it with heat resistant BBQ paint, but again like when I made the table there was a wind that picked up just after I finished spraying so I am not completely happy with the finish. It will do until I find something better to use.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjilhC3QNdcvPmREdb3eWcUrkyuqV9McoFX-IWIUjOG_Dey0hna-aQnupIQ16CGuA-UdHNyLBAVLgTdOIx7ic1G8N-CIuJK0i8gvkCCdmosb9C1cp3AvZ5D93e6eL8RuPFHq6q2ozhLcC28/s1600/camper_van_home_made_table_leg_cupboard_door.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjilhC3QNdcvPmREdb3eWcUrkyuqV9McoFX-IWIUjOG_Dey0hna-aQnupIQ16CGuA-UdHNyLBAVLgTdOIx7ic1G8N-CIuJK0i8gvkCCdmosb9C1cp3AvZ5D93e6eL8RuPFHq6q2ozhLcC28/s320/camper_van_home_made_table_leg_cupboard_door.jpg" width="240" /></a>Another task on the list was to finish off the table, I needed to construct a leg. For the first time I got a bargain in B&Q, a table leg with a flat 2mm square fitting that should be screwed to the top. Instead of screwing it I used a 12mm piece of ply with 2 laminates chiselled off to slide the square section into. It works amazingly well and at a cost of £3.20 saved me buying the standard camper table fittings that cost £20-£30. Also the leg is smaller than those others available. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This table will rarely be used but for transferring it to a camper on the registration document a table is a necessity. Also I do hope to take a few months away round Europe in a few years and it will be ideal for working on. At present it works as a kitchen cupboard door, rarely used as behind it are the noses of my windsurfing boards, but useful for storage and access to the water tank to refill it.<br />
Also today I put up two temporary kit racks, just to hold sails above the wheel arch. After the trip away its clear this is the best option for camping as any bags put under the sink would otherwise rest on the tips of the sails - as you can see in the picture. I cannot put a shelf there as the hole is just big enough to get the water tank out in terms of height. Maybe a hinged shelf would work.....but thats a project for the future I think.<br />
<br />
While away we stopped at a place called Trago Mills, where bargains are to be had and I only wish I had gone there to get most of the building materials I needed originally. I picked up a few neoprene tablet cases of various sizes. I have fitted a couple of these either side of the van near the rear speakers, which are perfect to hold my wallet, phone and keys when I get in bed. All I need to find now is a couple of decent glasses cases, one for the rear and one for the front.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow just a few jobs to finish off the overhead cabinet then I can relax for a while......Oh and I need to flat back the overspray where the previous owner touched up some key chips and a scratch......and trim the remaining red paintwork near the windows.....and....and....does it never end?<br />

I am more than happy with my efforts in the design of the new van. Most things have worked out perfectly, although there are a few bits I need to correct to get perfection. For example the bench seat in the kitchen rubs on the kitchen cupboard door too much when opening, and the strip lights need an anchor point at the power end so when you press the button on the opposite end they dont gradually slide out (already sorted this as soon as I got home).<br />

The Smex combination sink and hob is brilliant. After 5 years of manually pouring water for a brew, after shuffling a camping gaz stove into position whilst knelt down I really appreciate being able to flick a switch to fill the kettle, and boil it whilst sat in comfort.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The other thing I am really happy with is the external silver screen. I bought this as a seconds (without anything wrong that I can find, apparently a crease makes it a second so it shows their build quality) for £100 off ebay. It goes up in seconds without having to lick countless suckers that then leave marks all over the windscreen. In the morning there is not a single bit of condensation on the windows. It also rolls down at the front so you can get ready, watch the sunset in warmth, then fold the front up and jump in bed.</div>

I also put up my really useful rail for holding the stand up paddleboard and kayak inside the van over the cab area.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am not happy with the finish of the table, which folds up from the kitchen area shown in the picture. A gust of wind appeared just after I sprayed lacquer onto it, before then it was becoming a perfect finish.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

They will work for this trip and took a fraction of the time to complete. Finallly I loaded kit into the van ready for a trip away, it ate up 2 boards, 2 booms, 4 sails, 3 masts, other bits for windsurfing, Sup paddle, Paddle board, 3 sleeping bags, 4 wetsuits, 2 body boards, 40l of water. There is still most of the cupboard area left for stuff and room for a couple more boards. The design has worked perfectly.</div>

I can now see light at the end of the tunnel. All there is left to do are the front cupboard/seat, side cupboard, overhead kitchen storage, curtains, trim above the sliding door, kitchen front with lift up table, final trimming of paintwork, useful rail above cab area.....when I put it like that it seems a lot but these are not crucial jobs before I go away for a week.<br />

I carefully made sure all wires and tubing were secured well. The tap for the sink was a pain, with 8 different wiring combinations and no way of telling which wire did what due to a mismatch of colours on the sink and pump I just had a go and got it right first time. The pump wires are interchangable with no difference in flow.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also secured the water roll with a buckle strap stolen from an old sail bag, and used another one to make a more secure fixing for the gas bottle. Drilled another hole in the floor (now 3 in total) for the waste pipe which goes out next to the second drop out vent for gas.</div>

<div>
After Kat saw the primer on the worktop she decided she wanted the worktop grey and not black. So Friday evening I was looking for car paints in grey, then realised I had an offcut of Altro flooring. I know this is not ideal but it is a really good finish and goes well with the rest of the interior.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cutting the worktop was fun, with limited instructions I ended up using a lot of the techniques I teach in maths (bisecting the line, bisecting angles, and other loci). This did not take much time at all, the longest job was trimming round the edge with the provided rubber....it fell off more times that I can remember, I would get one bit on and the other end would fall off.</div>

<div>
Saturday night I sat at the sewing machine and made the bed covers, only to realise that I was about 5cm too short to do all 3 sections with single pieces. So chose to do the most used smaller piece properly with side sections. I made it up as I was going and think it has turned out well.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtAtkhjLuWSYofl-vSsb3zf9x0o1dhyiP21p60O3CSRSSo5BKEdu3XvhfEMS4dY9i1xgFYvWBdMYBcoTGOuo9Em-KG9ch401VL_z2HxXW-qp34FjiUHQPKMz_emS3YDi0TfwqoEe0GfNKP/s1600/camper_conversion_bed_installation_aliminium_supports.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtAtkhjLuWSYofl-vSsb3zf9x0o1dhyiP21p60O3CSRSSo5BKEdu3XvhfEMS4dY9i1xgFYvWBdMYBcoTGOuo9Em-KG9ch401VL_z2HxXW-qp34FjiUHQPKMz_emS3YDi0TfwqoEe0GfNKP/s320/camper_conversion_bed_installation_aliminium_supports.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Today I made the aluminium supports for the bed, bought a file and smoothed all the ends, then trimmed round the visible edge with some 1cmx1cm pine covered in the grey veltrim, now none of the supports are visible.<br />
<br />
Here is where all my sleepless nights were made into a well fitting product. The bed works perfectly and fits together really well.<br />

The sides of the van are sloped ever so slightly, so at bed height the centre support is 2cm closer to the wall than at the wheel arch box height. This means that the two loose pieces of bed can be locked into place lower down creating a seat looking in or out of the van. All I need to do is make a support for the back rest.<br />
<br />
Finally I finished off today trimming where the bed meets the kitchen worktop. It now looks seamless and I will upload a photo of the completed bit, this is one of the bits I have done on the spur of the moment that I am really happy with.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiapg-sAFNvbeQHBiiw_u39HF1q4xoQjVtyJINUjdtLGMXTGjd-EcvS37-InZuXSc4bxstQsrMqLORCy2_1W-8aZYE-40izdPB0RLWmerYnNsq-hnlGo3V1x9slbzK-81Htf1SULgHflcd-/s1600/camper_conversion_wet_box_kit_area.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiapg-sAFNvbeQHBiiw_u39HF1q4xoQjVtyJINUjdtLGMXTGjd-EcvS37-InZuXSc4bxstQsrMqLORCy2_1W-8aZYE-40izdPB0RLWmerYnNsq-hnlGo3V1x9slbzK-81Htf1SULgHflcd-/s400/camper_conversion_wet_box_kit_area.jpg" width="300" /></a>Many times I have needed a break from the more complex stuff and needed to do something without thinking that is simple. Over this time I have lined the Windsurf kit area with 1cm firm foam, some pipe cladding and very thick PVC. There are still a couple of bits left to do but you get the idea from the pic. Anywhere that would attract the nose of a board is well padded. Ultimately I will put racking in here, but as yet have not decided which way works best. It fits 3 boards from 79cm wide down to 59cm, these are my most used, I only load my smaller boards if the forecast is giving 25knots plus which is rare at the moment. Of course I then dont need my 79cm wide board.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
The options for loading are</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Sails on bottom, boards over the sails - footstraps facing down at about 30deg off vertical, nose bending round the curved gas box at the end of the wheel arch into the kitchen area, ending just where the sink starts. Booms either with sails or at an angle with the boards (I tend to leave the extension on the booms so with the sails works better.</li>
<li>Boards on floor on rails (will have padding under). Sails in a rack over the wheel arch and smaller sails on a false floor with the booms above the boards. </li>
</ol>
<div>
Of these 2 options I prefer the first I think. I will live with it for a bit and make my decision as I go. There will be a box built for kit where you can see the untreated part of the wheel arch. Also I have left the rear mid section untreated as I may use this for fins and extensions with some netting, time will tell for this. All I can say is there is a huge area for kit considering how much camper van is left for living.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is looking good, I can't believe now that I have done all this from scratch, the only ready made things I have used are the Smev Sink/Stove, Fridge, and an original Silver Screens shade for the front. I also realised today that I have only thrown away one half full bin bag of waste and will only have another half bag full of offcuts (small) of carpet and bits of wood (will probably keep these for a beach camp fire when its all done).</div>

Today did not go to plan. The plan was to fix the frame into the van and cut the ply for the bed. I need a second pair of hands for this due to the size of the sheet and only owning a jigsaw and a very cheap workbench that I do not really trust. My able assistant does not rise until early afternoon so I decided to crack on finishing off the rear cupboard. I started that at 7.30am and just about finished it at 2pm. I really do not know where the time went, well I do.......Bloody fittings not working as planned.<br />

In the old van I used roller catches and they worked well, never popped open and were easy to use, they were attached to vinyl covered ply. I tried my best to get them to work with this build but the difference is that I have covered it with thick Veltrim carpet. This stuff if very luxurious but a pain in the arse for the cupboards. </div>

Second option was to use a lever type latch, I could not get these spaced correctly either and they just sprang open all the time due to the 'springiness' of the carpet. About to resort to some bungee cord I thought about making up a couple of simple latches myself, using the same carpet trim. They work really well and are practical, but have a feeling that they may cause a bruise or two as they are a touch thick.</div>

This was a big learning point for me, stuff is so much easier to trim outside the van. I did not get frustrated with it once, yet every other bit of trimming I have done in the van made me tense. As the evening came I decided to finish off the support with a couple of doors for the opening. This opening will rarely be used, but is there should I need to get at stuff in the wetbox from within the van, and also to allow me to get at the gas canister to replace it, turning on and off is easily done through the kitchen cupboard.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also padded the drivers wall around the wheel arch box and gas box, then covered it with thick PVC to keep as much water away from the walls as possible. I will vent the wetbox, and plan to have some vents under the sliding window that will allow fresh air into the wet area from under the sink, obviously the rear of the area is open anyway.</div>

I think this picture shows how the van is going to look in a few days (hopefully......)</div>

Maybe some wind tomorrow, maybe my back will be up to in but at the moment I need to move like an old man. Far too much sun on it today!</div>
